“Me and all my friends
We’re all misunderstood
They say we stand for nothing and
There’s no way we ever could
Now we see everything that’s going wrong
With the world and those who lead it
We just feel like we don’t have the means
To rise above and beat it
So we keep waiting (waiting)
Waiting on the world to change
We keep on waiting (waiting)
Waiting on the world to change”
So, I get that people feel this way. But there is no way we can wait for the world to change. Change starts within.
Change is hard to do and it takes time and a lot of effort but here are my 5 tips for change.
1. Be real with yourself.
Do you really want to do this? Or is it based on other people’s demands? If you really want this you will keep going when things get difficult. I started BrandedU when a lot of people told me that it was just another event. I was going from being a freelancer to becoming an entrepreneur. I looked for advice and somebody whose opinion I really valued said it would not work. Well, it still takes an enormous amount of work but at the end of the day….. it is worth it.
2. Ask for help.
Yep. We ladies tend to want to do it all by ourselves. And I always used to feel guilty asking for help, because I didn’t want to bother anyone. But because I moved to the other side, the side where people ask me for help. I changed my mindset about this. I don’t see it as a weakness anymore but as a strength. You need the courage to show that you need help.
3. Know that every step counts.
My goal for 2017 is to be healthy. So guess what?! I have been exercising at least twice a week over the last 2 months. It is still hard but am now enjoying it more simply because I feel better. I did not feel better in the first month. Was always tired and now it actually gives me more energy. Every step counts. Literally.
4. Get comfortable being uncomfortable.
Because then you’ll be prepared to handle whatever situation comes along in your own life. I got this from this TEDxAmsterdamWomen talk by Lauren Zander. I deal with my discomfort usually by talking about it.
5. Believe that change is possible.
I look to other people for this. You know people that have made an incredible change in their lives. Remember how Robert Downey Jr used to be an addict? Or how George Clooney said he would never get married ;-). I know a silly example but I am sure a life-changing decision for him. I just think that challenges are part of the change. I call them growing pains. But I always keep on believing. My favorite quote is this one “Change your thoughts and you change your world”.
So no Mr. John Mayer, I will not wait for the world to change, I am gonna do this myself!
XOXO,
Nancy
