Lionel Richie

Hi you,

So no songtitel this week just the name of an icon. We all know Lionel Richie, and especially his hits such as HELLO, ALL NIGHT LONG, DANCING ON THE CEILING etc etc. I like his romantic stuff. And am not alone. Did you know that he has become a phenomenon in the Middle East? ABC News reported that “Grown Iraqi men get misty-eyed by the mere mention of his name. ‘I love Lionel Richie,’ they say. They can sing an entire Lionel Richie song.”

Love what you do and do it with love
Why does Lionel Richie’s phenomena matter to you? Well all I can say is that it matters to me because I admire anyone who can have a long and steady career and not loose their minds. I am fascinated with what we can learn from them. I only “met” Lionel Richie once. And that is an overstatement. Because really he was talking to an artist (Eros Ramazzotti) I was working with at the time at a tv show called “Domino Day”. But he was so kind to everyone, kept on smiling and making jokes all the time. He has also followed his own path, because he was courageous enough to leave The Commodores at the height of their success to pursue a solo career in the early nations. Remember “Easy (like sunday morning)”? That was one of their hits. The other thing I love about Lionel Richie is that he likes making connections with different artists whether they are young or old. He will do it if there is a connection. Like when he toured Australia and New Zealand with new comer Guy Sebastian. He also pays it forward because he handpicked Sebastian to support him. But what I love the most about him is his ability to keep going, reinventing himself and still being passionate and loving what he does. I have honestly never seen him perform without the love for the song on his face. And that is a unique thing.

Personal branding lessons learned from Lionel Richie are :
– Always try to be friendly (that is different from just being nice)
– Step out of your comfort zone, try something new
– Help and pay it forward to others
– Focus on your love and purpose for the job
– Keep re-inventing yourself (just so you don’t remain stuck in life)
