Have you heard of Frank Ocean? Well he has got a hit song with Calvin Harris called Slide. It’s a very catchy song. It is about someone who wants to ‘slide’ into the rich and famous lifestyle so they can live lavishly.

The song is great but the real reason I love this song is because of Frank Ocean. I love how he just announced in 2012 that he was gay. Not something that is common for hiphop and R&B artist to do. In fact, Russell Simmons, Def Jam Founder, said about this “Today is a big day for hiphop. It is a day that will define who we really are. How compassionate will we be? How loving can we be? How inclusive are we?”

I like the question about inclusiveness. To me that is why I started BrandedU so that women can be included. So that more women take a seat at the table, the board room table or the tv discussion table. More women at tables. That is what we need. So that we can influence policy.

How do we get there?

By being courageous. By daring to do what we need to do to move forward in our careers. That is why I love the Frank Ocean story. He took a step out of the dark (and out of the closet) and said: “Here I am with all my talents and this is the person I will be and this is how my career will go.” It takes real courage to be honest with yourself and with the world.

Every time I do an interview I run the risk of being judged, ridiculed or whatever. But I do it anyway, because I believe and stand behind what I have to offer, just like Frank Ocean.

So are you courageous enough to take those scary career steps to show the world what it is you have to offer?

XOXO,

Nancy
