We should all be feminists

I normally start my newsletter with a song, you can always see the topic in the title of the newsletter. But this time I decided to focus on a different kind of ROCKSTAR: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Her TEDx talk at TEDxEuston has inspired me and many others. I have spoken about her before in my newsletter called: Get down tonight.

I believe this woman has built herself an excellent personal brand. Let me tell you why:

Her style – she shows her Nigerian roots with her clothing style.
Her personal story – in this TED talk. she talks about the Dangers Of A Single Story and I love how she uses her own real life story to explain this.
Her work – did you know her books have been made into movies? You can check out the film version of “Half of a yellow sun” on Netflix.

Even Beyonce was inspired by her, so much that she used the following excerpts in her song “Flawless”:

“We teach girls to shrink themselves, to make themselves smaller. We say to girls, “You can have ambition, but not too much. You should aim to be successful, but not too successful, otherwise you would threaten the man.”

And this part:

“Because I am female, I am expected to aspire to marriage. I am expected to make my life choices always keeping in mind that marriage is the most important. Now, marriage can be a good thing. It can be a source of joy and love and mutual support, but why do we teach girls to aspire to marriage and we don’t teach boys the same?”

I love her! And guess what she is coming to Amsterdam!! I will see her talk at the Brainwash festival in Amsterdam on the 14th of October, will you be joining me?

In her TED talk about feminism she talks about the differences between men and women. We are different and up until today even in The Netherlands, there are big differences in our achievements. There are more men in boardrooms and top management positions. There are even more men that are entrepreneurs.
